Q:Weight/Height requirements for REAR FACING infant carrier? I have an Evenflo Embrace 5 rear facing infant carrier for my son and Im confused on the requirements for height/weoght. I know that BY LAW he must remain rear facing until he is 1, but according to the owners manual of this carrier, the weight requirement is 5-22 lbs and the height requirement is 19-29 inches.NOW...does this mean that if he is ABOVE either 22 lbs OR ABOVE 29 inches, that we have to change carseats?? Or...does he have to be 22 lbs AND 29 inches?? We will be moving him to a convertible seat once the time comes, but we just want to make sure that we have it right...Had I know this BEFORE having him, I would have bought a convertible to begin with...(stupid of me I know)thanks for the help!!!

A:Its either/or.Once your child exceeds the weight OR the height limit of the seat you have to buy a new one.http://www.carseat.org/Technical/tech_update.htm#heightweightHeight and weight limitsManufacturers are required to label each CR with the child weight and height ranges for which the restraint was designed. This labeling determines the dummy sizes used to certify the CR. If a CR is certified for 22 lb or less, it must be tested with the Newborn and 9-Month size dummies. Certification to 40 lb requires additional testing with the 3-Year size, and over 40 lb requires the 6-Year dummy. Most CRs are certified with at least 2 dummy sizes, but those labeled only for children under 11 lb (a small car bed) or over 40 lb can be certified with a single dummy. When applying these labeled limits to a child, the maximum weight and the head position are more important than the standing height (or length) in determining when to move to a larger restraint.Children should be weighed from time to time to anticipate when they are approaching the weight limit, and the additional weight of clothing is assumed. Tall, thin children will usually outgrow a CR before this weight is reached, but short chubby children may need to switch while they still fit in the harness and shell. For rear-facing, the top of the childs head should be below the top of the shell, and a margin of at least an inch is recommended, so that the head will be supported and contact with the vehicle minimized during a severe crash. For forward-facing, the top of the childs ears should be below the top of the shell, to guard against neck injury (whiplash) in a rear impact. In addition, the childs shoulders should be below the highest strap slots to minimize slack in the harness. The only way to determine these height limits is to put the child in the CR and see if it fits. Note that many combination seats have higher strap slots than convertibles, even though they are both for children up to 40 lb.Child restraint systems are engineered with a margin of safety, and they are tested under very severe conditions. It is therefore not necessary to move children out of their CR the moment they exceed either the weight specified or the recommended head or shoulder height. The concern is not that the harness or shell will break, but that, at some point beyond the limits, the CR will not provide optimal protection. The same applies to turning a convertible from rear- to forward-facing. However, with so many choices available today, it is a good idea to plan ahead for the next CR or belt system in time to get and install the best product for the child. This may involve installing a top tether anchorage or retrofitting the seat position with a shoulder belt.------------Edited to add:Kristin Ls answer which was taken from kidshealth.org is obviously based on marketing and not on fact.A child should never, ever, ever be in an infant carseat longer than necessary. You should NEVER EVER use them as chairs, or for baby to sleep, and most car seat instructions will tell you how to lock the handle to in a downwards position to prevent the car seat from rocking when the baby is in it.Use of a car seat can cause a very severe form of flat-head syndrome called squaring or cornering. It almost never resolves on its own and is very hard to fix even with intervention. This is briefly touched on later in the article when they say :Its a good idea to limit the amount of time your infant spends in the car seat while youre at home or while the baby is at child care. Too much time in the car seat may limit your babys movement and opportunities for stimulation, which help your infant develop sensory and motor skills. But it doesnt mention the more serious effects because the sites advertisers want you to buy two seats the first year. Graco, even more disgustingly now has a device you hang the carseat from to make it a swing. I hope someone launches a class action suit against them to pay for treatment. But I am sure their lawyers have put some very clever warnings in the instructionsAlso safety experts agree that use of the base with an infant carseat compromises its safety. But its the only way to use these seats because most parents will not install them correctly each time without the base and many infant carriers you cant even take the baby out very easily without undoing the cars seat but and uninstalling the seat.I have yet to see any reliable study prove that infant carriers are superior to convertible seats for safety of infants from birth -when both are used correctly. In fact, many studies suggest that 5 point harnesses are always superior and yet infant car seats only have a 3 point harness. Most infant-only car seats also do not have adjustable harness heights or crotch depths making it harder to get the correct fit. By Y! User: mystic_eye_cda
